I'm a sucker for the banana chocolate combo, and this is no different. The Nutella bakes into the batter beautifully and is still gooey in every bite.

This recipe is very easy to make with only 9 simple ingredients required! Let's get to baking!

    Why this recipe works

Nutella - Gooey hazelnut Nutella is swirled across every inch of this delicious batter before baking!

Bananas - The perfect way to use up any ripening bananas on your counter.

Easy to make - Simple, everyday ingredients are used with no chill time.

    Ingredients Notes

Full recipe and ingredients are in the recipe card below. Feel free to scroll through this section to view certain key ingredients we’re using!

All-purpose flour – This flour is used for the muffins and cannot be substituted for any other.

Bananas – 3 large very ripe bananas are used. If using frozen bananas, thaw and drain any excess liquid before adding into the bowl.

Brown sugar – I used dark brown sugar, but light brown sugar works as well!

Eggs – Must be at room temperature before starting your bake.

Oil – I used a flavourless oil. You can use any type of oil, but flavoured ones will slightly change the taste. You can also use melted and cooled butter instead.

Nutella - I used the regular brand Nutella. You can also use a no-name brand hazelnut spread, or any other creamy spread (ie: Biscoff spread).

    Step by step instructions

Here is how to make and bake these banana Nutella bars. You will need a 9x9 square pan lined with parchment paper, a large mixing bowl, a spatula, and a whisk.

Step 1 – Prep. Grease the pan. For easy removal of the bars, place parchment paper on the bottom and 2 sides of the pan. Grease again and then set aside.

Step 2 – Whisk wet ingredients. In a large bowl, whisk oil, brown sugar, bananas, vanilla, and eggs.

Step 3 – Add in dry ingredients. Toss in flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix until no dry streaks appear. This will be a runny batter.

Step 4 – Transfer. Place the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.

Step 5 - Spread Nutella. Take dollops of Nutella and drop it across the entire pan. Then take a butterknife and gently swirl the Nutella into the batter. Don't over-swirl or else the marble effect will disappear!

Step 6 - Bake. Bake the bars for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool, slice, and enjoy!

    Expert Baking Tips

Here are a few expert baking tips from my kitchen to yours

    • Use a gram scale. I cannot emphasize this enough! It is the most accurate way of measuring your ingredients in the kitchen. This is one of my favourites.
    • Use super ripe bananas. The more black spots they have, the better. This means they are sweeter.
    • Don't use to much Nutella. I used about 1/2 cup total. Any more than that and it will overpower the banana flavour.

    FAQ

Do I have to add Nutella?

No. Feel free to swap it for any other creamy spread (like Biscoff) or omit it completely.

Can I bake this in an 8x8 pan?

Yes, the bars will be thicker though.

Can I bake this in a 9x5 pan?

Yes. Just note that the bake time will be longer and keep an eye on it after 20 minutes of baking.
