I love baking with applesauce, there are so many delicious things to make with it.

Sometimes you just need a good thick oatmeal cookie, and this is just that. Plus the hints of applesauce flavour are so yummy.

They are chewy, irresistibly delicious, and so easy to bake up. No chill time required!

    Why this recipe works

    • Applesauce - A delicious apple flavour in the cookies.
    • Easy to make - No chill time, so you get your cookies even faster.
    • Oats - Hearty chewy cookies in every bite!

    Ingredients Notes

Full recipe and ingredients are in the recipe card below. Feel free to scroll through this section to view the ingredients we’re using!

    • Applesauce – Make sure to use unsweetened applesauce. If using sweetened, they will be slightly sweeter.
    • Brown sugar – I used dark brown sugar for this recipe, but light brown works as well.
    • Chocolate chips - I used semi-sweet chocolate chips, but dark or milk can work too.
    • Egg – Make sure it's at room temperature before beginning.
    • Flour – I used all-purpose flour for this recipe.
    • Oats - Large flake oats, also known as rolled oats work great for this recipe. Quick oats are to small.
    • Vanilla – Using a good quality vanilla is important to help strengthen the apple flavour.

    Step by step instructions

Here is how to make and bake these applesauce oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. You will need two trays lined with parchment paper, three mixing bowls, a spatula, a whisk, and a standard ice cream scoop.

Step 1 – Prep. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, and measure all ingredients.

Step 2 – Mix dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, add in the flour, oats, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3 – Mix wet ingredients. In a medium bowl, add in melted and cooled butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Then mix in egg, vanilla, and unsweetened applesauce.

Step 4 – Add in dry ingredients. Mix until a soft cookie dough forms. Don’t overmix!

Step 5 - Mix in chocolate chips. Add in the chocolate chips and mix in.

Step 6 – Scoop and bake. Scoop the cookies onto the prepared baking tray. Bake 6 at a time for 13-16 minutes or until the middle has set. Mine took 15 minutes exactly.

Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days or in the fridge for a week. You can also freeze the cookies and thaw in the microwave when wanted.

    Expert Baking Tips

Here are a few baking tips from my kitchen to yours

    • Use unsweetened applesauce, and not sweetened.
    • Don’t over mix the dough once the dry ingredients are added. If you over mix, the dough will appear more dry and tough.
    • Make sure the flour is spooned and leveled properly. If you stick the measuring cup into the flour, this will compact it. A scale will give you the most accurate measurements.

    FAQ

    Can I use bananas instead?

Yes! If you’d like to make Banana Oatmeal Cookies instead, feel free to sub the 3/4 cups of unsweetened applesauce for 1 cup of mashed bananas (approx 2 medium-sized bananas).

    Can I add other add-ins?

Yes! Feel free to add in pecans, chopped apples, or whatever your heart desires!

I don't see the measurements anywhere on the page. How many eggs, how much flour, etc.?
