Ingredients Notes
Feel free to scroll through this section to view some key ingredients we’re using in these Applesauce Chocolate Chip Cookies!
- Applesauce – Make sure to use unsweetened applesauce. Sweetened can be used, but it will sweeten the flavour (obviously).
- Brown sugar – I used dark brown sugar for this recipe, but light brownworks as well.
- Chocolate chips – I used semi-sweet chocolate chips, but dark or milkworks as well.
- Flour – I used all-purpose flour for this recipe.
- Oats: Rolled oats work great for this recipe.
- Vanilla – Using a good quality vanilla is important to enhance the apple flavour.
Step by step instructions
Here is how to make and bake these applesauce chocolate chip cookies. You will need two trays lined with parchment paper, two mixing bowls, a spatula, a whisk, and a standard ice cream scoop.
Step 1 – Prep. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper, and measure all ingredients. Melt the butter and allow it to come back down to room temperature.
Step 2 – Mix dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, add in flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Step 3 – Whisk wet ingredients. In a large bowl, add in melted and slightly cooled butter and dark brown sugar. Then whisk in vanilla and unsweetened applesauce.
Step 4 – Add in dry ingredients. Mix until a soft cookie dough forms using a spatula. Don’t overmix!
Step 6 – Scoop and bake. Scoop the cookies onto the prepared baking tray, placing them 3-4 inches apart from one another. Bake 6 at a time for 13-16 minutes or until the middle has set. Mine took 15 minutes exactly.
Store these cookies in an airtight container for up to 3 days or in the fridge for a week. You can also freeze the cookies for up to 3 months in a ziplock bag and thaw in the microwave when desired.
Expert Baking Tips
Here are a few baking tips from my kitchen to yours
- Use unsweetened applesauce, and not sweetened.
- Don’t over mix the dough. If you over mix, the cookies will be drier!
- Make sure the flour is spooned and leveled properly. If you stick the measuring cup into the flour, this will compact it. A gram scale will give you the most accurate measurements.
FAQ
Can I use bananas instead?
Yes! If you’d like to make Banana Oatmeal Cookies instead, feel free to sub the 3/4 cups of unsweetened applesauce for 1 cup of mashed bananas (approx 2 medium-sized bananas).
Can I add other add-ins?
Yes! Feel free to add in pecans, chopped apples, or whatever your heart desires!
