Baked until bubbling, this easy blueberry crumble is a dream! It uses fresh blueberries, but frozen can be used as well. When using frozen berries, make sure to thaw them, drain any excess liquid, and then use them in the recipe.

The crumble comes together in a couple easy steps. The blueberries get tossed with lemon zest, which brightens and pairs perfectly with the blueberries.

If you're looking for an easy summer dessert to please a crowd, look no further!

    Step by step instructions

Here is how to bake this easy blueberry crumble. You will need a 9 inch baking dish, 2 mixing bowls, and a spatula.

Step 1: Make blueberry base. Toss the fresh blueberries with lemon zest. Then sprinkle in cornstarch, white sugar, and cinnamon, and stir to evenly coat.

Step 2: Make crumble. Add butter, flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, cornstarch, and salt into a bowl. With your hands or a fork, mix until a crumbly base forms. Set aside.

Step 3: Layer. Add the blueberries to the bottom of the pan and spread evenly. Then sprinkle the crumble evenly on top.

Step 4: Bake. The crumble bakes for 40-50 minutes, until the blueberries are sizzling and the top is a light golden brown. Remove from oven, allow to slightly cool, and enjoy!

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate dessert! What a classic.

    FAQ

How do I store blueberry crumble?

Cover the dish with saran wrap and keep it in the fridge for up to 4 days.

    Can I freeze blueberry crumble?

Absolutely. You can freeze blueberry crumble either before or after baking for up to 3 months. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before baking or reheating. If you're using a glass or ceramic baking dish, allow it to completely come back to room temperature before placing it in a hot oven to help prevent the dish from cracking due to sudden temperature changes.

    Can I use frozen blueberries?

Yes. If using frozen, make sure to thaw, drain any excess liquid, and then use them.

How do I keep my blueberry crumble from being runny?

Tossing it in cornstarch should prevent this from happening. Also let the crumble cool for about 15 minutes before scooping so it has time to settle.

What's the difference between a crumble and a crisp?

A crumble typically has a buttery topping made with flour, sugar, and butter, while a crisp usually includes oats, which create a crunchier texture. Many recipes now-a-days use the terms interchangeably!

Can I make this easy blueberry crumble ahead of time?

Yes. You can prepare the crumble up to a day in advance, cover it, and refrigerate it until you're ready to bake. You can also bake it ahead and reheat it before serving.

    Equipment

    9x9 Baking Pan
    Spatula

    Notes

Dish size: I used an oval baking dish that measured roughly 8 inches by 10 inches. The dish you use should be approximately the same, whether it's a 9x9, or an 7x11, etc. If you plan on using a 9x13, double the recipe.
Blueberries: I used fresh, but if you use frozen make sure to thaw them and drain any excess liquid, and then you're good to continue the recipe as normal!
Butter: I used unsalted, but salted works as well.
Sugar: 1/2 cup (100g) is used in the crumble. This crumble is not overly sweet, as the sweetness comes from the blueberries. If you'd like it to be sweeter, add another 1/4 cup (50g).
