Why this recipe works
Applesauce - Unsweetened applesauce is used and creates a moist and soft muffin!
Cinnamon sugar - Such a delicious sprinkle on top of the muffins!
Easy to make - Everything gets mixed together in a few simple steps.
Ingredients Notes
Here is a list of key ingredients used in these Applesauce Muffins.
All-purpose flour – This flour is used for the muffins. You can also use 1:1 gluten-free flour.
Applesauce - I used unsweetened applesauce. Make sure the sauce is at room temperature before beginning. If using sweetened applesauce, they will be slightly sweeter.
Baking soda - Always double check the expiry date.
Baking powder - Always double check the expiry date.
Eggs – Make sure they are at room temperature before starting.
Oil – You can replace this with melted and cooled butter.
Spices - I used cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg. Although the nutmeg is optional, the cinnamon contributes to the lovely flavour of these muffins.
Step by step instructions
Here is how to make and bake these Applesauce Muffins. You will need a 12 muffin tin, muffin liners, 3 mixing bowls, a spatula, and a whisk.
Step 1 – Prep. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line the muffin tin with 12 liners and set aside. If you need a recommendation, this is my favourite tin. In a small glass, mix together cinnamon and white sugar. This will be used to sprinkle on top of the muffins.
Step 2 – Mix dry ingredients. In a medium-sized bowl, add in the dry ingredients. Mix together and set aside.
Step 3 – Whisk wet ingredients. In a large bowl, add both sugars and oil. Whisk together until well combined (2-3 minutes). Then add in the eggs, unsweetened applesauce, and vanilla. Keep on whisking for another 2-3 minutes until smooth.
Step 4 – Add in dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients into the wet. With a spatula, gently mix together until a soft muffin batter forms. Do not over-mix this step. Stop mixing once all the ingredients are incorporated.
Step 5 – Scoop. With a scooper, evenly divide the batter between the liners. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon white sugar on top of each muffin.
Step 6 – Bake. Bake the muffins at 425°F for 5 minutes, then lower the oven to 350°F and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes. The muffins are ready when a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
These muffins are best served fresh or next day. They stay good on the counter for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Expert Baking Tips
Here are a few expert baking tips from my kitchen to yours
- Use a gram scale. This is important! Using a gram scale ensures the proper weight. This is one of my favourites.
- Sprinkle cinnamon white sugar on top before baking! This will give you a delicious crisp sugary muffin top we all love.
- Do not over-mix! When no flour streaks appear anymore, stop mixing.
- Use unsweetened applesauce, and not sweetened.

How many muffins will this recipe make?
Ania says
Hi Jeannie! This recipe makes 12 muffins 🙂
John says
It says 15 times that it makes 12 muffins. No where does it actually state any measurements. What is wrong with people today? Is this even real or is it AI? How hard is it to state "add 1 cup flour, 1tsp baking soda, etc." Or is it just that you don't make money that way?
Ania says
Hi John, this is a real person writing all of these posts 🙂 the recipe with measurements and the steps is in the recipe card, you scrolled past it to write this comment.
